More visitors than people
Spain receives more foreign visitors in a year than it has inhabitants — above eighty million against a population of about forty-eight — which puts it among the two or three most visited countries on earth. Tourism is not a side industry here. It is a large share of the economy and of employment, and it shaped the coastline, the airports and the calendar. It also strains them: housing costs in Barcelona, Palma and the Canaries have made visitor numbers a live political argument, with demonstrations in recent summers. Both things are true at once.
