The present is money
Spanish weddings run on cash. The customary gift is money, either handed over in an envelope on the day or transferred beforehand to a bank account printed on the invitation — which startles American guests and is entirely ordinary here. The guideline is that you cover the cost of your own seat at the dinner and add something on top, so the sum is not small. What you get in return is a whole day: the ceremony, a long drinks reception, a seated dinner, and dancing that will outlast you.
