Usted is rarer than the textbook suggests
This lesson introduces usted, so it is worth knowing how sparingly Spain uses it. Spaniards move to tú far more readily than most of Latin America: a new colleague, a boss of similar age, a waiter, a shop assistant and any stranger near your own age will normally be tú from the first sentence. Usted is kept for the notably older, for officials, for formal writing, and for occasions where distance is the point. Using it where tú is expected offends nobody, but it can create exactly the formality you were hoping to avoid.
