Erasmus, and leaving to find work
Spain is the most popular destination in Europe for Erasmus students and among the biggest senders too, so a year abroad is an ordinary part of a Spanish degree rather than an exotic one. The other movement is less cheerful. After the 2008 crisis youth unemployment passed fifty percent, and a generation of graduates left for Germany, Britain and Latin America to find work that matched their qualifications; many have since come back. Irse al extranjero therefore carries both meanings at once — an adventure, and something you may have to do.
