Simpático doesn't mean sympathetic
Simpático is the adjective you will hear most often and the one most often mistranslated. It does not mean sympathetic. It means warm, easy company, good to be around — and in Spain it is close to the highest ordinary compliment a person can be paid. Its opposite, antipático, is correspondingly harsh. Note too that ser and estar stay apart here: es simpático describes the person, while está simpático says they are being unusually pleasant today, which can carry a faint suggestion that they want something.
