Several countries' worth of weather
Spain is not one climate and the postcard version fits only part of it. The north coast — Galicia, Asturias, the Basque country — is green because it rains there constantly, closer to Ireland than to the Mediterranean, and locals call it la España verde. The central meseta is high, dry and extreme: Madrid sits at 650 meters and swings between hard frost and forty degrees. The Mediterranean coast is the mild one. The Canaries are subtropical and off the coast of Africa, which is why Spaniards go there in January.
