Nothing happens without a number
Spanish bureaucracy runs on a single identifying number. Citizens have a DNI, foreigners an NIE, and one or the other is required to open an account, sign a lease, get a phone contract, be paid, or see a doctor — often before you have anywhere to live, which is the ordering problem every newcomer meets. Getting one means an appointment, a cita previa, booked online and often weeks out, at the relevant office. Bring more documents than the list specifies. Spanish banks also charge maintenance fees more readily than American ones, so ask what an account costs.
