The review that is not about the pay
A Japanese 評価面談 is usually decoupled from money in the short term. Pay follows the 等級, the grade, which moves slowly and on an annual cycle, so a good half-year does not produce a raise and a bad one does not produce a cut. What the review is actually for is the record: your 自己評価 goes in alongside your manager's, the gap between them is itself a data point, and a candid self-assessment is read as competence rather than weakness. This is why Alex volunteering that one target fell short is the right move, and why his follow-up question about 昇給 was the awkward one — not because money is taboo, but because it belongs to a different conversation on a different timetable.
