The mail that cannot be recalled
Japanese corporate mail has a ritual for this, and it is not the recall button. You send a second message immediately, titled 【お詫び】 or 【訂正】, which states what went wrong, asks the recipient to discard the first, and apologizes once without elaborating. Speed matters more than wording: a correction that arrives in two minutes is housekeeping, and the same correction after an hour is an incident. Large companies run mail systems with a delayed-send window of a few minutes for exactly this reason, and the delay is set by the IT department rather than the sender — because the people who need it most are the ones who would switch it off.
