The ランドセル
Japanese primary school children carry a ランドセル, a rigid leather satchel worn on both shoulders, and they carry the same one for all six years. It is expensive, frequently bought by grandparents as the gift marking the start of school, and it comes in a widening range of colors after decades of red for girls and black for boys. It is built to last six years and to protect the back — and, being standard issue in practice, it makes a six-year-old visibly a schoolchild.
