Alex is shopping and asks a shop assistant for help finding things.
個 counts small compact things — eggs, tomatoes, apples. Japanese has a different counter for almost every shape: 本 for long thin things, 枚 for flat ones, 人 for people. 個 is the one to reach for when you are unsure about an object.
How do I read these pronunciations? See the pronunciation guide.
1. で and に — two kinds of place
で marks where an action happens: スーパーで買います. に marks where something is: 牛乳の隣にあります. Buying happens at the supermarket; the eggs sit beside the milk.
2. いくらですか — how much?
The whole question is two words, and the thing asked about takes は in front: これはいくらですか. Prices answer with 円 on the end of the number: 二百円です.
3. が — pointing at the new thing
は sets up what you are talking about; が introduces what is new or surprising about it. 今日はトマトが安いです frames the day with は and puts the news — the tomatoes — on が.
4. ありません — we don't have it
The negative of あります, and the standard way a shop says something is out of stock. Note the は in 今日はありません: it quietly implies 'today at least', leaving other days open.

You bag your own groceries
At a Japanese supermarket the cashier scans and takes payment but does not pack. Your basket moves to a separate counter past the register, where you bag things yourself at your own pace — which is why nobody is hurried and why the line moves faster than you expect. Bags have been charged for by law since 2020, so people bring their own. Expect a surprising amount of packaging inside the store, individually wrapped fruit included, and a seasonal aisle that turns over completely several times a year.
