Saying the criticism first, and the money last
The shape of this conversation is deliberate and worth copying. Serra opens by removing the thing Alex would otherwise spend the meeting worrying about — la conferma non è in discussione — because an Italian appraisal is widely understood to be a conversation that cannot happen honestly while the other person is trying to work out whether they still have a job. He then takes responsibility for the one unmet objective himself, in writing on the form, which is the move that makes the subsequent criticism credible. The criticism itself arrives in the register this block has been building: reported speech for the praise, the impersonal for the weakness, and un punto di miglioramento as the name for it. Note what is absent — there is no numerical score discussed aloud, and the money comes last and understated, un riconoscimento economico, non grande, ma c'è. Italian workplaces vary enormously in how formally this is done, and in much of the private sector there is no scheda at all; where there is one, its stated purpose is usually equità fra uffici, comparability between departments, rather than a verdict on an individual. The useful thing for a foreigner to know is that the understatement is not coldness: ha ragione, ma a volte è già stato deciso is a direct criticism, said as plainly as this register allows.
