Separating the mistake from the fault
What Serra does in the second line is the move the whole lesson is built around, and it is not a universal workplace instinct: he sets aside di chi è la colpa in favour of come è successo. Italian has a rich vocabulary for blame — la colpa, la negligenza, l'omissione, il rimprovero — much of it borrowed from legal language, and a workplace can easily end up conducting a small trial. The counter-move, and the one that reads as competence rather than softness, is to establish the chain of events and then fix the chain. Alex's proposal of a doppio controllo is the thing that closes the conversation. The last exchange is the one worth transplanting. Serra sends the client communication himself and says why: così risulta che l'azienda risponde, non una persona. Italian business correspondence is written in the company's voice as a matter of course, which is the serious use of the impersonal and the passive this block has been teaching — si è verificato un errore is evasive from an individual and correct from an organisation. The same construction, the same grammar, and the ethics of it depend entirely on who is hiding behind it.
