Alex, I'm calling with an offer, and before you say anything, I ask you to hear me out, because it's serious. London would like you to translate another of our novels, the debut of a thirty-year-old Neapolitan writer, Lucia Ferraro, which has sold far more in Italy than we expected. It's called «Le ore piccole», it's set in Naples over a single night, and the delivery would be in eight months.

That's wonderful news, and thank you for thinking of me, but I know the book, and the Neapolitan in the dialogue is a different mountain compared to the Triestine. Before answering I'd like to understand the terms properly, because when all's said and done, eight months for a four-hundred-page novel isn't much. Would it be better for me to accept right away, in your view, or would it be worth asking for more time?
