Translators trained in Trieste
Trieste has one of Italy's best-known schools for translators and interpreters, part of the University of Trieste, with a long tradition of training conference interpreters and translators in many languages. Its students are a natural audience for a talk on literary translation. The idea that a work is never finished but only abandoned is often traced to the French poet Paul Valéry, who said it of poems; translators have adopted it as their own, because the same text could be revised forever. In a question-and-answer session, Italian speakers buy time with a set of small phrases — come dire, diciamo che, per così dire, in un certo senso, bella domanda, lasciami pensare. Used well, they make a speaker sound thoughtful rather than hesitant.
