Finished copies
Weeks before a book reaches the bookstores, the publisher receives the first finished copies from the printer, and sends some to the author, the translator, the editor and the people who will review or sell it. For many translators, holding the first copy is the moment the work becomes real. Translators' names on covers are a long-standing issue. In Italy and elsewhere, the translator's name usually appears on the title page, and more and more often on the cover as well, after years of campaigning by translators who argue that a translated book is the work of two writers. The grammar of this lesson is the grammar of anticipation and memory: non vedevo l'ora che arrivasse, temevo che fosse diversa, ero contenta che avesse scelto, vorrei che fosse ancora in bozze. A past emotion pulls the congiuntivo into the past.
