Translation grants
Many countries support the translation of their literature abroad, and Italy is one of them. The Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs runs a program of grants and prizes for the translation and publication of Italian books in other languages, and the Ministry of Culture has its own support for translation through the Centro per il libro e la lettura. In general it is the foreign publisher that applies, with the contract, information on the translator and the book, and often a sample of the translation. Applications like these are written in a recognizable formal register. The applicant becomes il sottoscritto, acts in qualità di something, dichiara di aver letto the conditions, and attaches documents with si allega. Qualora replaces se, and past infinitives — dopo aver ricevuto, per aver tradotto — compress whole clauses into a few words. For a translator, the grant application is also a rare chance to describe the book in public for the first time, before any review exists. Marta's rule — say what the novel does, and prove it — is the rule of every good book description.
