When a Campaign Partly Wins
Local disputes over land use in Germany often end not with a clear winner but with a compromise worked out in committee: a building is moved, a share of social housing is negotiated, or a green space is preserved in exchange for building elsewhere. Even after a committee's decision, the development plan usually goes through a further public display period, during which residents can submit new objections before the district council adopts it. Linden trees, Linden, are among the most common and best-loved street and village trees in Germany. They flower in late June and July, filling streets with a sweet scent, and many towns have a Dorflinde, a village linden, that once marked the meeting place of the community. Unter den Linden, Berlin's famous boulevard, is named after them. Neighborhood parties, Nachbarschaftsfeste or Straßenfeste, are a common way to celebrate in a Kiez. They usually need a permit from the district if they take place on public land, and neighborhood centers and associations often help with tables, benches and organization. Many are deliberately nonpolitical, so that everyone in the area feels welcome.
