VO or VF
A French cinema listing will say VO or VF, and the difference matters. Version originale means the original soundtrack with French subtitles; version française means dubbed. Dubbing is a large and skilled industry here and many viewers prefer it, so a foreign film in a small town may only be showing dubbed, while cities carry both. The backdrop is deliberate policy: a levy on every ticket funds French production through the CNC, and radio stations carry quotas for French-language music. The term used for all of it is exception culturelle, and it is defended openly.
