Breakfast is extra
Two charges catch visitors out. Hotel breakfast is rarely included and often costs more than the café on the corner charges for the same coffee and croissant — walking out for it is completely normal and nobody minds. And a taxe de séjour, a small nightly tourist tax set by the local council, is added at checkout whatever the booking site quoted. Rooms run smaller than American ones, the elevator may predate the concept of luggage, and a double bed is often two singles pushed together under a single sheet.
