Wishing someone a good year, until February
The New Year has its own etiquette. The evening itself is le réveillon de la Saint-Sylvestre, spent with friends rather than family — the inverse of Christmas, which is family and quiet. Then comes a long stretch of greeting: bonne année is said to everyone you see for the first time that year, and the custom runs through January, so wishing a colleague a good year in the last week of the month is normal rather than late. Workplaces hold their own vœux, a short ceremony where someone senior speaks and everyone drinks something.
