Interrupting is engagement
French conversation tolerates, and expects, an amount of overlap that English speakers hear as rudeness. Cutting in signals that you are following closely; waiting politely for a full stop can read as indifference, or as having nothing to say. Disagreement works the same way — argument is a social pleasure rather than a breakdown, and having your opinion flatly contradicted is not a personal attack. Dinner tables get loud for this reason, and the volume is not a sign that anything has gone wrong. The skill to acquire is not patience but timing.
