Juillettistes and aoûtiens
French summer vacation splits the country into two camps: juillettistes, who take July, and aoûtiens, who take August. The changeover falls on the last weekend of July into the first of August — the chassé-croisé — and it is reliably the worst traffic of the year, with the state traffic service Bison Futé coloring the map black and publishing advice weeks ahead. School summer holidays run about two months, and a great many French children spent them at their grandparents'. August is still when smaller businesses simply close, a paper notice on the door giving the date of return.
