Flowers, and which ones not to bring
Arriving empty-handed is not done: flowers, good chocolate or a decent bottle are all correct. Flowers carry rules, though. Give an odd number, except thirteen. Avoid chrysanthemums altogether — in France they are the flower taken to graves at Toussaint, and they read as funeral flowers anywhere else. Red roses declare romantic intent, so they are a poor choice for a colleague. Wine is welcome but not automatic: a host who has planned what to serve may set your bottle aside for another day rather than open it, and that is not a slight.
