Addresses, and the mystery of 12 bis
French street numbering runs odd on one side and even on the other, as it does in English-speaking countries, but with an extra device. When a building is subdivided, or a new one squeezed in, it takes the neighboring number followed by bis, and then ter for a third. So 12, 12 bis and 12 ter are three separate doors. In Paris, Lyon and Marseille the arrondissement places an address faster than the street name does. And the floor above the street is the first: street level is the rez-de-chaussée, floor zero.
