Your RIB, and why checks survive
Opening a French account produces a document you will be asked for constantly: the RIB, a slip carrying your account details, handed over to set up direct debits for rent, utilities and salary. Keep copies. You will also need a justificatif de domicile, a recent utility bill proving where you live, which is awkward when you have only just arrived and nothing is in your name yet. And France still writes checks long after most of Europe stopped — some landlords, schools and clubs prefer them, and your checkbook arrives by mail.
