What to wear in a public pool
French public pools enforce a dress code that catches visitors out every summer. Loose swim shorts are banned — men are required to wear close-fitting trunks, and pools sell them at the door to people who turn up in the wrong thing. A swim cap is compulsory in most municipal pools, for everyone, and you walk through a shallow footbath on the way in. The reasoning offered is hygiene: shorts double as street clothes and briefs do not. You may argue the point, but the lifeguard will not be moved.
