Allô is only for the phone
Allô belongs to the telephone and nowhere else — say it to someone's face and you will get a laugh. The rest of the call is more formal than an English speaker expects: callers identify themselves straight away, and bonjour still comes first, even at eight in the evening. Calling someone at home has its own timing. Between noon and two, and again after about nine, you are interrupting a meal or an evening, and people will say so. A text asking whether now is a good moment is the normal way to avoid it.
