Julien asks Alex about their family.
Job words drop the article in French: Mon père est ingénieur, not est un ingénieur. And médecin stays médecin for a woman — some job words simply have one form.
How do I read these pronunciations? See the pronunciation guide.
1. Mon, ma, mes — my
"My" changes shape to match the thing owned, not the owner: mon père (masculine), ma sœur (feminine), mes frères (plural). "Your" works the same way: ton, ta, tes.
2. Avoir — j'ai / tu as
Avoir is "to have" — you met it for age in Lesson 1. Here it does its everyday job: saying what you have. J'ai = I have, tu as = you have.
3. Plus … que — comparing
To say someone is more of something than someone else, wrap the adjective in plus … que. The adjective still agrees: plus âgée for a sister, plus jeunes for brothers.
4. Habiter — a regular -er verb
Most French verbs end in -er and all follow one pattern: j'habite, tu habites, il/elle habite, ils/elles habitent. The endings look different but -e, -es and -ent all sound the same out loud.

Sunday lunch
The family meal that matters most in France is Sunday lunch. It starts around one, runs two or three hours, and moves through courses — apéritif, starter, main, cheese, dessert, coffee — with the table itself as the point rather than the food alone. Extended family travel for it, and it is the usual answer to when you will next see your cousins. It is also part of why Sunday is quiet everywhere else: shops shut and streets empty because the country is indoors eating. If you are invited, bring something for the table and expect to still be there at four.
