挂号, and going straight to the hospital
China has no family doctor acting as gatekeeper. For anything beyond a pharmacy's reach you go directly to a hospital, and the first step is 挂号 — registering at a desk or, now, in an app, choosing the department and sometimes the seniority of doctor you want. Then you wait. Big-city hospitals are crowded, consultations are short, and payment happens between the steps rather than at the end. One thing to know: intravenous drips have been prescribed for minor illness far more readily than elsewhere, and public campaigns have worked to reduce it.
