农家乐 — the weekend in the village
农家乐, roughly farm-happiness, is the weekend industry that grew out of city people wanting a village. A family with a house near a city converts a few rooms, cooks what they grow, and takes guests who come to eat, fish, pick fruit and sit outside. It is cheap, informal, and booked by phone or WeChat rather than through a site. Part of the appeal is generational: a great many urban Chinese are one generation removed from the countryside, and a weekend at a 农家乐 is a visit to somewhere they half remember.
