Egg dumplings and the New Year table
蛋饺 are a fixture of Shanghai and Jiangnan New Year cooking: thin omelets made one at a time in a ladle over a flame, filled with seasoned pork and folded into a half-moon. They go into the 全家福 hot pot and other New Year dishes, and their shape, like a gold ingot, is said to bring wealth. Making them is slow, and in many families it is a job the older women teach the younger ones before the festival — which makes the kitchen in the days before New Year a place where families talk, and sometimes argue, about the year ahead. In this lesson the argument is about where 顾阿婆 will live after the move, and 苏小雨 asks for it not to be filmed. Deciding what not to film is part of documentary work, and the film respects her request.
