Remembering 1966–1976
The Cultural Revolution (文化大革命, 1966–1976) touched almost every family and neighborhood in China. In 1981 the Chinese Communist Party adopted a resolution on its history which described the period as responsible for the most severe setbacks and heavy losses suffered since 1949. Within that framework, how people remember those years varies greatly with their age, family background, where they lived and what happened to them. Historians and documentary makers often note that memories of the same events can differ sharply: some people recall fear and loss, some recall the freedom of closed schools or the excitement of youth, many recall both, and some prefer not to speak at all. Oral histories of the period are often gathered with particular care for consent. This lesson gives two residents' memories side by side and draws no conclusion, as the film itself does. 顾阿婆 chooses what to say and when to stop.
