The weekend is thirty years old
The two-day weekend arrived in China in 1995. Before that the standard week ran six days, briefly cut to five and a half in 1994, and the move to a full Saturday and Sunday was deliberate policy meant to encourage rest and domestic spending. The newness still shows. Weekend leisure is taken up enthusiastically — the pool, the park, shopping malls that work as climate-controlled town squares — while competing with a work culture that has not entirely conceded the point, 加班 or overtime being a routine feature of office life.
