Nobody calls anymore
Answer a Chinese phone and you say 喂 — and note the tone: nominally fourth, but on the phone it comes out as a rising second tone. The larger point is that voice calls have largely given way to WeChat. Conversation runs on held-button voice messages, sent and answered in bursts, which is why people talk into the bottom of a phone rather than holding it to an ear. Callers also tend not to introduce themselves, on the assumption that their number is already saved under their name.
