Darren, every sign in this building is in four languages, and I can only read two of them, which is humbling for someone with a job in languages. Which ones are they, exactly, and does everyone here speak all four? I'm asking because I keep hearing people switch in the middle of a sentence.

They're English, Malay, Mandarin and Tamil, which are the four official languages, and Malay is also the national language, which is why our national anthem is sung in Malay. Hardly anyone speaks all four, but almost everyone speaks at least two, because at school we learn English plus what's called a mother tongue. Much as I'd like to say I'm fluent in Mandarin, my Mandarin is about as good as your Hokkien, which is to say polite but limited.
