I tried to give an autorickshaw driver directions in Kannada this morning, and he answered me in perfect English, then in Hindi, and then he laughed. How many languages does the average person in this city actually speak? In Toronto I'd call someone with two languages bilingual, whereas here two seems to be the minimum.

Most people I know speak at least three, and the driver probably speaks four or five, because he talks to the whole city every day. In my household in Pune we spoke Marathi, I learned Hindi and English at school, and I've been picking up Kannada since I moved here. By contrast, my cousins who grew up in London speak English and understand Marathi, but they can't read the script.
