Eleven weeks of summer
Spanish schools break for around eleven weeks, from late June to the second week of September — among the longest summer breaks in Europe, and far longer than the leave any parent has to cover it. The gap is filled by grandparents, by campamentos, and by sending children to the pueblo or the coast for weeks at a stretch. That is why so many Spanish adults remember summers spent somewhere other than home, with cousins, in a village or beside a municipal pool — and why those summers are told in the imperfect: they happened over and over.
