What C1 means, and what comes after it
The Common European Framework describes a C1 speaker as someone who can understand long, demanding texts and recognize implicit meaning, express ideas fluently and spontaneously without much obvious searching for words, use language flexibly for social, academic and professional purposes, and produce clear, well-structured, detailed text on complex subjects. Alex's year at Cierzo maps neatly onto that description: the irony he had to learn to hear, the registers he had to switch between, the arguments he had to hold under pressure. What C1 does not mean is just as important. It does not mean sounding native, and it does not mean making no mistakes; Spanish speakers themselves confuse haber and a ver, and newspapers have errata. It does not mean knowing every regional variety, and Spain alone has several co-official languages, Catalan, Galician and Basque among them, alongside the many accents of Spanish itself. And it does not mean the learning is over. Many advanced learners describe a plateau after C1, when progress becomes slow and invisible. The usual advice is the one Diego gives: change the input rather than the textbook. Live somewhere new, read whole books, write regularly, spend time with people who speak differently from the ones you know. For Alex, that is a village in Soria, where the Spanish of the countryside, its words for land, weather, livestock and work, is a whole new layer of the language. The C2, the highest level, exists for those who want it, and some learners pursue it for professional reasons. But for many, the step after C1 is not another certificate. It is the choice Alex makes here: to stop studying Spanish as a subject, and to use it to live a part of his life.
