社員寮 — the company dorm
A 社員寮 is a dormitory the company owns and rents to its own staff, usually far below market rate and often with the rent taken straight out of salary. For decades it was part of what lifetime employment meant: the company housed you, and in return you were unlikely to leave. Rooms are small and single, bathing is often communal, and a 寮母 or a caretaker lives on site. The institution is shrinking — companies have been selling the buildings since the 1990s and younger employees would rather have the cash — but a large employer transferring a new hire to another city will still put them in one, because it solves the guarantor problem that lesson 92 runs into head first.
