What the verbale is for
Alex's suggestion at the end of the meeting is more substantial than it sounds, and it works because of how Italian organisations treat the written record. Il verbale is not a courtesy summary: it is the document that establishes what was decided, it is circulated for approval, and a point that is a verbale can be relied on later. Asking for something to be minuted — mettere a verbale, or the formal mettere agli atti — is therefore a way of converting a conversation into a fact, and nobody takes offence at it. The same logic runs through everything Block A met at a counter: the protocollo number, the stamped receipt, the autocertificazione. Italy runs on records of having asked. The other thing visible here is how an Italian meeting handles disagreement. Nadia's in effetti non l'avevo guardato concedes a point outright, which is normal and costs her nothing; Serra's ciò nonostante holds his position without rejecting Alex's; and the outcome keeps both. The register for this is the conditional and the impersonal, not assertiveness — which is why a newcomer who argues in the indicative can sound as though they are issuing instructions, and why posso? before speaking is worth more than a well-constructed sentence after it.
