Quarto livello, and why that answers the salary question
When Dottor Serra says fourth level of the CCNL he is giving a more precise answer than it sounds. Italian pay and conditions are largely set by contratti collettivi nazionali di lavoro — sector-wide agreements negotiated between employer associations and unions, covering the large majority of employees — and each defines a ladder of numbered levels with minimum pay, duties and notice attached. Knowing the sector and the level tells an Italian roughly what the job pays before any negotiation happens, which is why the question about l'inquadramento comes before the question about money. Two consequences worth knowing. Negotiation happens in the gap above the contractual minimum — the superminimo — which is what Serra means by entro un margine, so there is real but bounded room. And the levels are portable: moving between employers in the same sector, you carry an expectation of at least the same livello, and accepting a lower one is a visible step back rather than a private arrangement. Alex's stated reason for moving — non c'è crescita, with a fixed-term contract behind it — is both true and the socially legible answer, which in a country where a contratto a tempo indeterminato is the real prize needs no further explanation.
