The CV with a photograph
An Italian curriculum conventionally carries a photograph, a date of birth and sometimes a marital status — details that would be unlawful to request in Britain or the United States and are simply expected here. The European standard Europass format is widely used and widely disliked. Below the surface, the labor market is harder than the courtesies suggest. Short-term contracts are common well into people's thirties, the unpaid or barely paid tirocinio is a standard entry route, and a permanent contratto a tempo indeterminato is treated as a genuine life milestone, discussed by families the way a mortgage might be elsewhere. Personal connection still matters more than in northern Europe — the word is raccomandazione, and although it carries a whiff of unfairness it also just describes knowing someone. Two small things for the interview itself. Dress more formally than you think necessary; la bella figura from Lesson 24 applies with force. And the handshake is firm, the address is Lei throughout, and you do not move to first names unless invited, even if the interviewer is your own age.
