Disagreeing at work without it becoming personal
German workplaces have a reputation for directness that is mostly earned and often misread. What is direct is the content: a colleague will tell you the text is too long, the figure is wrong, or the idea will not work, and will do it in front of other people without treating it as a confrontation. What is not direct, and this surprises people, is the attribution of blame. Notice that Alex never says du. The governing norm is the one Tobias states: sachlich bleiben. Criticism is understood to attach to die Sache, the work, and not to the person who produced it, and both sides are expected to maintain that distinction. This is why a German colleague can say Das ist falsch about your draft and then have lunch with you cheerfully — from inside the norm, nothing happened. The failure mode runs the other way: if you treat work criticism as personal, you will be read as someone who cannot separate the two, which is a real professional liability here. The Ich-Botschaft is not folk wisdom but a technique with a history. Communication training based on Marshall Rosenberg's Gewaltfreie Kommunikation is widespread in German companies and public administration, and the vocabulary from it — Ich-Botschaft, Bedürfnis, Wertschätzung, auf Augenhöhe — turns up in ordinary speech. You do not have to adopt the whole framework to benefit from its first move, which is to say what you need rather than what the other person did wrong. There is a structure behind the conversation too. If a disagreement with a colleague does not resolve, the escalation path is usually to the Vorgesetzte first, and after that to the Betriebsrat, the works council, which lesson 83 covers and which exists precisely so that a conflict with your manager does not have to be settled by your manager. Larger employers may also have a Konfliktberatung or a Mediationsstelle. Going straight past your colleague to any of these is regarded as escalating badly, which is the practical reason Alex raises it with Tobias directly: not politeness, procedure. One asymmetry to know about. The direct-content norm is strongest among peers and weakens upwards, so the same sentence you would say to Tobias gets framed more carefully for Herr Krause — Darf ich kurz einhaken? at lesson 63, Ich möchte anmerken, dass … , Könnte man das noch einmal ansehen? Hierarchy in German offices is flatter than in many places but it is not absent, and it shows up in exactly this kind of hedging rather than in titles.
