Closed on Mondays, and the castle in every town
Almost every German museum closes on Mondays. It is so nearly universal that Montag Ruhetag needs no explanation on a sign, and a visitor who has planned a museum day for a Monday will spend it somewhere else. The reason is historical and practical — the weekend is the busy time, so the staff week starts on Tuesday. Expect one long evening a week instead, often Thursday, and free or reduced admission on some days for students, children and the unemployed; asking Gibt es eine Ermäßigung? is completely normal. You will also notice how many towns have a Schloss. Germany was a patchwork of several hundred independent states until 1871, each with a ruler who needed a residence, which is why a town of 20,000 people can have a palace that would be a national monument elsewhere. The tourist office itself is usually on the market square or inside the Rathaus, it sells the local Gästekarte, and its staff will hand you a great deal of printed paper — Germany's tourism industry has not gone fully digital and does not appear to want to.
