Keep your ticket until you are out
Buy a metro ticket, validate it at the turnstile, and then keep hold of it. Inspectors work platforms and exits, and a discarded or unvalidated ticket counts as no ticket at all — the fine is charged on the spot, and being a confused visitor does not help. Machines often prefer a chip-and-PIN card to cash, and anyone staying more than a few days buys a pass instead of singles. Changing lines is a correspondance, signposted in orange, and a platform's direction is named for the last station on the line rather than a compass point.
