Seeing someone off is the point
送 — to see someone off — is an obligation rather than a nicety, and how far you go says how much the person matters. A guest is walked to the door, then to the elevator, then to the gate of the compound; a friend leaving the city is taken to the station or the airport and waited with until they have gone through. Declining the escort politely does not usually work. 舍不得, unwilling to part, is the word for the feeling, and it is said out loud rather than left implied.
