The 年会 and the lucky draw
The office year-end dinner, 年会, is an institution and considerably more than a meal. Companies book a venue, departments perform sketches and songs they have actually rehearsed, and there is a 抽奖, a lucky draw, whose prizes can be substantial — phones, appliances, sometimes months of salary — with numbered tickets and a stage. Attendance is effectively expected, as is taking part in whatever your department has been signed up for. It is the one night of the year when the hierarchy is played with rather than observed.
