The school day does not end at three
Chinese schooling runs long. A typical day starts before eight and goes to five with a break in the middle, and from middle school onward many students come back for 晚自习, supervised evening study, until nine or later. Weekends bring homework and, for many, extra classes. The pressure is real and openly debated — recent policy has tried to curb commercial tutoring for exactly that reason. Primary school is gentler, and its rituals stay with people: the red scarf of the Young Pioneers, morning exercises in the yard, a class monitor.
