Renters in redevelopment
In many old urban neighborhoods in China, a large share of residents are renters, often migrants from other provinces, who live in subdivided rooms. Compensation in redevelopment generally goes to those with registered housing rights, not tenants, who may simply have to find somewhere else to live. Renters are often reluctant to appear on camera, for fear of trouble with landlords or employers, which makes them hard to represent in documentaries. Filmmakers may use voices, hands or empty spaces, or note the absence directly on screen. Inviting a critical participant to shape a closing note, in his own words and anonymously, is one way filmmakers acknowledge what the film could not show.
